The 8th Wonder of the World: Coconut Oil – Beauty

5 Apr

Since embarking on my natural living journey, I have come across many theories and “remedies” for living healthier. Most border on ridiculous or cost an arm and a leg. So I was looking for something that was a multi-purpose product. In comes: COCONUT OIL!

This lovely smelling oil is so amazing, I could rave about it for ages! But I will just give you the basics in a series :) Starting with the beauty benefits:

Hair Care: Coconut oil is possibly the best natural nutrition for hair. It encourages healthy hair growth and makes it shine. If you massage your scalp regularly, its a great moisturiser and keeps dandruff, lice, and lice eggs at bay. I use it as a conditioner and in place of styling products to keep my curly hair controlled. The proteins in this oil helps nourish damaged hair.

Stress Relief: Coconut oil is very soothing, specifically when used as a massage oil, and is therefore stress relieving.

Skin Care: Coconut oil is a fantastic moisturiser and is perfect for all skin types. Its really good for dry skin and flakiness. It helps treat various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections.

Premature Aging: Coconut oil apparently helps prevent premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its antioxidant properties.

No ‘Poo

No I’m still changing plenty of nappies per day…

I have finally chucked out the shampoo! Its weird, one day I was lathering up my hair and the next time I decided to take the plunge. Since my hair is pretty curly and prone to frizz without careful treatment, I was a bit worried, but I decided to persevere and give it a go. I am so glad it did it – my hair is all purty curly  and manageable! No more frizz!!

They say it can make your hair greasy for a while, but I must admit I haven’t really had that problem, my hair seems happy!

This is the best pic I have of it for now… This is on the second day after washing. (please note my adorable eskimo baby… this was taken last Wednesday, and it was really cold – plus the poor baby has an ear infection)

Its really easy and super cheap!! Just get baking soda (in SA that bicarbonate of soda – NOT baking powder) and apple cider vinegar.

Just mix one tablespoon baking soda with one cup of water and put in a pump acting bottle, you can use more if you have thicker/curlier/greasier hair. Then just wet your hair and apply as much of the mixture as needed to your scalp and massage it in. Rinse well.

For conditioner you can use one table spoon apple cider vinegar with one cup of water, I put it in a spray bottle and just spray onto my ends and rinse. It really softens your hair, but be careful not to use too much as it can make your hair greasy.

I hope this works out in the long run, it would be so nice to save money like that and also be green :) Its really good to know I am no longer putting chemicals on my hair and face.

My next step is to make my own baby products, it seems so wrong to put any chemicals on my baby… Watch this space…

Mah Noo Hair

2 Nov

I cut my hair in anticipation of the loooong time without being able to go out and have such things done… One more thing off my to do list.

I must just say, this cut and blow dry cost me R70… and she came to my house. Not to brag but my hairdresser is also the manager at Carlton International in Cape Gate… Schweet deal…

Make Up and Hair Inspiration

19 Oct

We’re doing a maternity shoot in November and two of my friends are doing my hair and make up, so I can be all spoilt and girly.

Here are the pics that inspired me for the shoot:

I hope my pregnant self can pull it off and I can look all purty-like :)
